Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth, offering a natural-looking and functional alternative. While they may take some getting used to, modern dentures are more comfortable and realistic than ever before.
There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Your dentist will help determine which option is best for you based on whether you need to replace all or only some of your teeth, as well as the associated costs.
How Do Dentures Work?
Full dentures consist of a flesh-colored acrylic base that fits over your gums. The upper denture covers the roof of your mouth, while the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to fit around your tongue. Dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory from impressions of your mouth, ensuring a comfortable and precise fit.
How Long Do Dentures Last?
Over time, dentures may need to be relined, remade, or rebased due to normal wear. As your mouth naturally changes with age, dentures may become loose, making chewing difficult and irritating your gums. For this reason, it’s essential to see your dentist annually for a checkup.
Caring for Your Dentures
When handling your dentures, always do so over a towel or basin of water to prevent damage if they fall. Never let your dentures dry out. Soak them in a denture cleanser solution or plain water when not in use. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the dentures. Brush your dentures daily to remove food deposits, plaque, and prevent staining. An ultrasonic cleaner can help, but it doesn’t replace daily brushing. In the morning, brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft-bristled brush before inserting your dentures. This helps stimulate circulation and remove plaque.
If your dentures break, chip, crack, or become loose, see your dentist immediately. Avoid adjusting them yourself, as this could cause irreparable damage. With proper care and regular checkups, dentures can provide you with a comfortable and functional smile for years to come.
